A Literacy Program for Children in Port Chester
Reach Out and Read is a national non-profit organization that is actively providing a literacy program at Westchester "Open Door Family Medical Centers". This is a great volunteer opportunity for RNNC Members to help within their local and neighboring communities.
Find out about Reach Out and Read on their web site
Reach Out and Read (ROR) promotes early literacy in pediatric exam rooms across the nation by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Open Door Family Medical Center is a designated ROR site and has expanded our Reach Out and Read Program to their waiting rooms. They believe that providing a literacy rich environment will benefit the child and community.
Who We Need: Volunteer readers, ages 14+, who have two important traits: a love of reading stories and a genuine interest in helping children.
What: Read aloud to children in Open Door’s waiting areas, distribute books for children to take home, and model read aloud techniques to parents.
Where: We need volunteers at the Open Door locations in Ossining and Sleepy Hollow Mon-Sat. (Port Chester only on weekdays)
When: Monday-Saturday year-round; Times are site-specific, shifts are generally 2 hours.
How else can you get involved? Open Door Family Medical Center needs help from the community to maintain a collection of gently used children’s books for ages up to 6 for distribution in their waiting areas. Donations can be dropped at Port Chester Open Door, 5 Grace Church Street, during regular hours of operation. Pick-ups and drop-offs of books can also be arranged with the Reach Out and Read Coordinators, Charlotte Baughman (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Jenny Palacio (email@example.com).
