The TWIG of Westchester County Helps the EMS
Ever wonder who responds when you call for an ambulance? In Rye, the call goes to the Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook Emergency Medical Services, which is a 501c3 non-profit corporation with 50 paid staff and five volunteers. The agency responds to roughly 5,000 calls per year and serves a population of over 50,000 in the three neighboring communities. The Corp operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week out of its headquarters on Ellendale Avenue in Port Chester and has the ability to deploy 4 or 5 ambulances at the same time. PCRRB EMS also employs a paramedic response vehicle and a bike team. The Corps prides itself on the high standards and qualifications it demands from its staff and on the wide range of services it provides to our community, including training physicians and lay people in the community, stand-by coverage to school and community events, and CPR instruction. EMS has also committed to a maximum response time of 8 minutes 59 seconds, and its average response time during the first half of 2006 was just over 4.5 minutes.
Since the closing of United Hospital in February 2005 the demands on the EMS have grown tremendously. Ambulances now have to travel 8 to 12 miles – versus approximately 3-5 miles United was open. Not only does this take more time and manpower, but wear and tear on vehicles has grown. The three communities combined support approximately 37% of the Corps’ $1.7 million operating budget, with the rest provided by insurance billing and a small contribution from fundraising.
How can we help? The Twig of Westchester County New York, Inc. is the successor to the Twig Organization of New York United, which was born in Rye, NY in 1911 to support United Hospital. With the closing of United, the Twig sought a new cause and found a natural fit in the EMS. The Ambulance Corps’ mission to provide quality emergency medical services and local medical transportation to our community is very much aligned with the Twig’s dedication to support the healthcare needs in this area.
